shifty_gardenerS, M, R and I went to a pub today after a comedy show (which was comedic, as advertised) and sort of discovered a new sport. The pub was full of people intently watching what we assumed was the start of a soccer match. Once play started, however, it looked emphatically like rugby. This was odd, because I happen to own several rugby jerseys (they're really comfortable, what can I say) and none of them were a) sleeveless or b) clearly made thin, stretchy fabric. But no, thought I, clearly they're playing somewhere hot. That is totally what is going on. It was around this time that the camera zoomed out a little and I realized they were playing on a circular field. And that there were four large goalposts that made three goal spaces at either end of the (confusingly circular) field. Is rugby where Quidditch is from?? I asked myself. Because this still had to be rugby, what with the american football-shaped ball. But then I noticed that they were occasionally kicking said ball, and, perhaps most importantly, suddenly there appeared in the corner of the screen the network logo "Fox Soccer Plus."
We all stared at the tv screens in confusion, as if under observation the mystery sport would either normalize or reveal itself. After 5 minutes, the pitch was still round. So I googled the team names, and it turns out that Australians are crazy bastards that play weird ass soccer on a round field with the wrong ball. And call it football, of course.
Blah blah blah will insert thoughts about SRB's Unspoken (which I'm skimming through in preparation for when I have the sequel in my hands, at long last, sometime next week), the thoughts that lead me to open this lj window before I got distracted by the need to share/vent the truth about the weirdness of Australia to you all, here tomorrow.
Alsoooooooo speaking of Unspoken, earlier tonight, I was skimming it/reading all the bits with the characters I liked while S and M were watching H50. I looked up to make a lame joke in response to something on the screen, only to look around and notice I was the only one awake. I, the person reading a book while watching, was the most attentive person in the room. After a short laugh at this thought, I then realized that the remote was far, far away and thus let the next episode and a half play onto unconscious (theirs) and half-attentive (mine) ears. One of the times I looked up, there was veeery intent wristing. What even is this show, guys.
