Jan. 1st, 2009 12:30 amSo I should probably go to sleep right now. our cross-country trip in a series of nutshells:
- Lauren's friend told her there are armadillos in the south so apparently she kept inquiring after them all the way through florida. xD (Rachel, Dad and I joined her and Mum in New Orleans on the 28th)
- I stayed up until 5 watching bloody monday and doing random stuff and having fun with Katie and Deann so I felt salty and seawashed on the plane until the really good Gumbo in New Orleans at dinner. Our waiter was super nice and the crowded restaurant had a warm atmosphere. afterwards we wandered down this street where live music poured out of doorways and thrummed in the air. (I caught myself trying to duck out of the way of a few particularly piercing notes) Something about people making music has a bit of magic in it for me, probably because I've only ever been to two concerts in my life, haha. Anyhow, it turned out to be Bourbon Street, which makes sense.
- we had this cute 1800s suite thing with a connecting living room that was really nice and was the entire second floor. The windows and doors were narrow and tall, like most of the architecture in the French Quarter. When I tried to go into my room, I turned and stepped sideways to run my hand along the wall for the lightswitch and tripped down the stairs with an undignified yelp, ending up on the floor, laughing.
- We took most of Louisiana and Texas the next day, which was pretty much Arashi + solitare (oh how I love you, my ipnizzle) --> reading until the light ran out --> drama until the battery ran out --> sitting with Lauren sprawled across my lap and Rachel on my shoulder, drifting in and out of consciousness until our 2:30 arrival at this hotel that had memory foam beds, of all things.
- Then we went to the Carlsbad Caves, which were gorgeous and made me feel like I was on the moon/under the alien at the end of Evolution. I wish we'd had an adequate camera. There were these gorgeous panoramic shots my fingers were itching to take, but all I had was a cellphone without flash and lots and lots of rock formations that looked like Indian temples and Lord of the Rings' king memorials and other such fanciful shapes. Anyhow, by the time we mosied out and drove to Roswell, the UFO museum had closed an hour early (I kept seeing all these families with children walking up to the building, excited, and then walking away in disappointment. they shouldn't have closed it early :\) so we drove to Santa Fe instead, stopping to look at the stars and the venus and thumbnail moon that look like they're posing for a calender or wallpaper or flag shot. The grand canyon is next!
We found this amazing Indian place to top off the year, which reminded me of the indian place we found in London. So I had tea in my last meal - it was either going to be Thai iced tea or Chai, but fates decreed I'd have the better meal with the lesser drink. It was so nice.~
Nevertheless, I really wish I was in SD right now. Because Deann and Katie toasted the new year with the melon soda J drinks in Bloody Monday and are having a sleepover of epic Countdown proportions, but then again it's really fun to spend time with the sisters and family going vegan restaurant hopping, even if it does involve staring out windows for long hours at a time, so maybe I'm happy where I am.
random thing I did last year:
YEAR IN REVIEW: Take the first sentence (or two) from the first post of each month of 2008. That's your year in review.
January:zaou taishi, Aria, Nodame Cantabile, Mekakushi no Kuni, Past Day Present
(Rachel: restarts the episode of Sailor Moon Stars we were on At least I'm not a hideous fucker. Us:....xD)
February: Turns out Matsuri Akino did another manga that's been licensed. Only the first five (out of thirteen D:) are out, but I bought them, and Count D appears in number 4! dskag; it's not gay but is lovely lovely nonetheless ♥.
March: The crackiest ProDai pairing would be mirai!Ken-zou/notmirai!Yousei. xD
Pudding stick things are better than Pocky. And cheaper. I wish I had another box. D:
Yesterday I saw Chocolat! Such a good movie. ♥ I also went to Oliver and chilled with Katie and Katelyn. It was awesome.
April:Happy half-birrrtthhhhdddayyy to me!Roxy is a boring llama!
I found The Chocolate Wars, a book I've heard people talk about, at the goodwill bookstore. I hope it'll be good. ♥
May: I tried to make Tamagoyaki with Jennifer today! *___* Oishii desuyo! It was really quick and easy to make, too. We're going to try to make Okonomiyaki sometime in the future~ I can't wait, especially since I've never had it. :D
June: I used to have a bootleg copy of Windows XP (I don't know why. my dad is weird) so my dad finally put an official copy on my computer and EVERYTHING was wiped off. I had put everything on my external harddrive (I got one yesterday! :D) but I still had to redownload Word, Firefox, Windows Media Player, etc. It was so so lame.
July: Camp today! I can't really believe it, but.
August: D:D: Interning for a week was like the best thing ever and Braveheart was ridiculously amazing and hilarious with all of her messing with people and deluding the campers.
October: I suspect Step and Go and Happy Birthday have the same tune.
November: Seattle!
Even this far North, my family still manages to chase of
December: I always forget how nice and effortlessly fancy my east coast relatives are.
Maybe I should post less/shorter this year? idk. I just seem to be getting longer and longer, although this journal is really as much for posterity as anything else.
and, randomly and unrelatedly:

Hah! It may rain, but I have a secret plan of insulation.
The music of the morning (aka, this is to a stupid tune I made up on the spot that is very epic and the first one's about my cat because she is clean for once. which deserves serenading.):
Little cupcake of the night
Flying through the sodden night
is this grey sock quite alriiight
there's a spider in my drawer
there could be so many more
it's like opening a door
for the spiders, more and more

Date: 2009-01-01 10:03 am (UTC)A cross-country trip sounds pretty awesome~ Even if it is a lot of driving. Of course, I don't get to travel much, so it sounds more exciting to me than it probably would to most people, haha.

I really liked what you said about the music on the streets- because I visualized that surprisingly well and I think I kind of feel the same when it comes to live music ♥
When I tried to go into my room, I turned and stepped sideways to run my hand along the wall for the lightswitch and tripped down the stairs with an undignified yelp, ending up on the floor, laughing. Sasuga, Shige.
